Racism is alive and well in the Obama campaign !

Those comments made Friday by Portsmouth Democratic Sen. Louise Lucas during a local radio interview on behalf of President Barack Obama's re-election campaign have taken on a life of their own, particularly in conservative media.

On "The John Fredericks Show" on WHKT (1650 AM), Lucas said Romney is "speaking to a segment of the population who does not like to see people other than a white man in the White House or any other elected position."

Lucas was responding to a question from Fredericks about Romney's criticism of Obama for his lack of private sector experience.

"Let's be real clear about it. Mitt Romney is speaking to a group of people out there who don't like folks like President Barack Obama in any elected or leadership position," she added.

"We know what's going on here," Lucas continued. "Some people may be afraid to say it, but I'm not. He's speaking to that fringe out there who do not want to see anybody other than a white person in a leadership position."

When pressed by the radio host to expand on her view, Lucas said that some of the distaste for Obama in the electorate is due to racial concerns.

Lucas went on to call for a discussion about race relations.

"I know there are people who are probably cringing in their seats because they don't want to hear it, but it's time that we face the reality that we need to have a national discussion on racial issues," she said during the interview.

Navy aircraft carrier plans hit by further delays

Britain could be left without an aircraft carrier equipped with fighter jets for the next decade after soaring costs threw Ministry of Defence plans into doubt.

The rethink also comes amid fears that a design flaw in the new Joint Strike Fighter makes it unable to land on aircraft carriers. Leaked Pentagon documents found the plane had failed eight simulated landings.

A redesign is likely to prove costly and delay the project meaning that when Britain’s only aircraft carrier comes into service in 2020 it may have no jets.

Philip Hammond may be forced to choose an alternative model of the Joint Strike Fighter, which would throw into doubt an agreement between France and Britain to share weapons and equipment, including aircraft carriers .

Of Babes and Buffalo

For a time I worked for the U.S. Olympic Committee as a certified referee and coach for International Skeet and Trap. This involved traveling around the country refereeing various Shooting Championships and putting on shooting clinics.

It was in this capacity that I happened to be at the U.S.O.T.C. Shooting Center located on the edge of the Army’s Fort Carson Colorado, near Colorado Springs. I was there to “work” the Junior National Championship in International Skeet.

This Championship pits each Junior State Champion in traditional skeet, which is slower and easier against each other in the much tougher discipline of International Skeet. In traditional Skeet the gun is mounted in the shooting position before the bird is called for and the bird appears immediately on the shooters call. In International Skeet the gun is held with the butt below the hip, and when the shooter calls for the target there is an automated variable delay of up to 6 seconds before the bird appears. The gun may not be raised until the bird appears.

International Skeet is not widely shot in the U.S. but it is the format used in the Olympics so the only broad input to this discipline is from traditional National Skeet Shooting Association State Championships around the country.  These shooters are traditionally from about 12 years of age up the age of 17 years 364 days. Those shooters who do well there and catch the Olympic Coach’s eye (an old Air Force buddy of mine) are often offered a spot on the Olympic Development Team.  If their skills improve enough they are then offered status of Resident Athlete at the USOTC where they begin serious preparation to become an Olympic Shooter. 

The training is intense and they shoot several rounds of their discipline morning and afternoon nearly every day of the week. They do their schoolwork in the evenings and attend mandatory training and conditioning.

Since this particular Championship included youngsters who may not have competed at this level before we held a clinic the day before the actual shoot to allow them to become familiar with the surroundings, shoot the much more disciplined course (no talking permitted), and get used to the referees and the delayed targets.  It also allows the coaches/ referees to get an idea of the skills of each shooter and give them some additional help if they need it. As a rule these are accomplished young shooters and most help is with rules and procedures.

This particular shoot was held in late August, and it had been raining for several days. The road to the range at that time was dirt, and thanks to a couple local yahoos in their 4 wheel drives it was not passable by two wheeled vehicles. The Center has a fleet of 4 wheel drive vehicles and we used them to ferry all the shooters and their gear to the facility, which is one of the premier trap and skeet ranges in the country. Since we would be there all day the USOTC Dining Facility sent us a really nice lunch and at mid day we took a break to eat and swap stories.

My Son (Maryland State Champ) and I shared a table with one of the lady Olympic Shooter Coaches and one little waif who looked somewhat like a drowned rat! She was all of about 13 years old and less than a hundred pounds soaking wet, and she was just that, soaking wet. It had rained that morning and she did not have her rain gear with her.

Thus we met Ms. Kimberly Rhode, a mere Babe in our eyes.

Now Kimmie  (as she was called) did not do that well in the Championship, it rained, it snowed, it blew, and it was just generally miserable. She wore glasses and they would fog up or get rain covered, and it was certainly not the conditions she was used to at her sunny California home shooting range. But I could see that she could shoot, and shoot well for her age and stature. Had she been better equipped she would have done very well.

In fact when the Olympic Development Team (those under 18) stepped up to shoot they were impressive, equipped, and deadly.  The donned their custom tailored gore-tex rain suits, their rain and fog proofed shooting glasses, and commenced to put on a show. Equipment does matter - - - you cannot shoot targets moving at 70 mph if you cannot see them clearly.

But let us return to that lunch table for just a minute. Kimmy and our tablemate, and perhaps one other young lady shooter were the only females there. There were probably 40 young men.

 The room was knee deep in teenaged testosterone, and the banter was quite lively and jovial, but clean.  Our tablemate, an Olympic Shooter herself, was trying to draw Kimmie out and into the conversation that was circling the room. She asked her what her shooting goals in her life were in an attempt to get her talking.  Kimmie piped up that she had two real shooting goals in life one was to shoot on the Olympic team, and the second was to take a Cape Buffalo in Africa.

You should have heard the giggles going around the room, the young men should have been ashamed. I am sure I heard - - - “The Cape Buffalo is considered the most dangerous game animal there is!”    and  “ A Cape Buffalo would tromp a skinny little kid like you right into the dust”  and the topper  “ If you were to shoot a rifle big enough to take a Cape Buffalo it would kick you so hard you would be back in diapers”.

Kimmie just sort of took it all in and the sat upright in her chair as if to gather her strength.   You could have heard a pin drop in that room when Kimmie announced “ and I took my Cape Buffalo last year ! “

I knew instantly that this was a young lady to be reckoned with !

Presidential rivals trade charges of lying, Romney calls for apology over 'felony' remark

The battle between President Obama and Mitt Romney reached new levels of rancor Thursday, with each campaign accusing the other of lying over Romney's tenure at private-equity firm Bain Capital. 

The charges flew at a rapid pace, and by the end of the day the Romney campaign was calling for an apology after a senior Obama campaign official said the Republican presidential candidate may have committed a felony. 

Obama official Stephanie Cutter made the claim following a Boston Globe article that said documents show Romney was in charge at Bain for three years longer than he had claimed. Cutter said Romney was either misrepresenting his position at Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, "which is a felony," or misrepresenting to the American people. 

Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades issued a blistering statement in response. 

"President Obama's campaign hit a new low today when one of its senior advisers made a reckless and unsubstantiated charge to reporters about Mitt Romney that was so over the top that it calls into question the integrity of their entire campaign," Rhoades said. "President Obama ought to apologize for the out-of-control behavior of his staff, which demeans the office he holds. Campaigns are supposed to be hard fought, but statements like those made by Stephanie Cutter belittle the process and the candidate on whose behalf she works." 

The challenge capped a frenzied and nasty day on the campaign trail.

Cutter turns the rhetorical volume way up.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter suggested that Mitt Romney may be a criminal on a conference call with reporters this morning about a Boston Globe report that shows that Romney stayed at Bain Capital three years past when he said he'd left.

Cutter said that there were two ways to interpret the story. The first: Mitt Romney was "misrepresenting his position" at Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, "which is a felony."

Or, he was "misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people. If that’s the case, if he was lying to the American people, that’s a real character and trust issue," Cutter said.

Cutter called on the Romney campaign to clear up by the issue by releasing the candidate's tax returns.

"If the SEC filings aren’t accurate, then prove it," she said.

Bob Bauer, head lawyer for the Obama campaign and a former White House counsel, also implied that Romney could be in legal trouble. He said that SEC documents are "very carefully scrutinized by lawyers because of the very severe consequences that follow from making statements to the SEC that aren’t correct."

After all, there is an entire academic literature in the social sciences dedicated to showing conservatives as naturally authoritarian, dogmatic, intolerant of ambiguity, fearful of threat and loss, low in self-esteem and uncomfortable with complex modes of thinking. And it was the candidate Barack Obama in 2008 who infamously labeled blue-collar voters “bitter,” as they “cling to guns or religion.” Obviously, liberals must be happier, right?

Wrong. Scholars on both the left and right have studied this question extensively, and have reached a consensus that it is conservatives who possess the happiness edge. Many data sets show this. For example, the Pew Research Center in 2006 reported that conservative Republicans were 68 percent more likely than liberal Democrats to say they were “very happy” about their lives. This pattern has persisted for decades. The question isn’t whether this is true, but why. "

Russian practice targeting our missile defense sites

"Two Russian strategic nuclear bombers entered the U.S. air defense zone near the Pacific coast on Wednesday and were met by U.S. interceptor jets, defense officials told the Free Beacon.

It was the second time Moscow dispatched nuclear-capable bombers into the 200-mile zone surrounding U.S. territory in the past two weeks.

An earlier intrusion by two Tu-95 Bear H bombers took place near Alaska as part of arctic war games that a Russian military spokesman said included simulated attacks on “enemy” air defenses and strategic facilities.

A defense official said the Pacific coast intrusion came close to the U.S. coast but did not enter the 12-mile area that the U.S. military considers sovereign airspace.

The bomber flights near the Pacific and earlier flights near Alaska appear to be signs Moscow is practicing the targeting of its long-range air-launched cruise missiles on two strategic missile defense sites, one at Fort Greely, Alaska and a second site at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif."

OBITUARY: THE SAD PASSING OF COMMON SENSE

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned, but overbearing, regulations were set in place.

Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teenagers suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they had themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer paracetamol, sun lotion or plaster to a pupil, but could not inform the parents when a pupil became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, but the burglar could sue you for assault because you protected yourself and your own.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim.

 Not many attended his funeral because so few realised that he was gone.

If you still remember him, pray for him. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Secret Service stops fire Holder demonstration

U.S. Secret Service officers shut down a student-led protest calling for President Obama to fire Attorney General Eric Holder this morning, according to a report from in front of the White House.

After discovering a “suspicious package,” the Secret Service ended the protest. “Several agents seemed hostile to our march and seemed anxious for us to leave the area,” Maurice Lewis, a University of California student, told Campus Reform. “The discover[y of] the ‘unidentified package’ came just as the protest began gain traction.”
